What are Hair Extensions and what are they made of?
Hair extensions are lengths of either natural or synthetic hair that come in many different colors, lengths, textures and styles to match any hair type. They can be fixed close to your scalp via a number of different ways such that the extensions are disguised with your own hair.
What can hair extension do for me?
Hair extensions can give your hair instant length, volume and even color (lowlights and highlights) thereby completely transforming your look!
Won’t hair extensions show in my hair?
When applied properly by a professional, hair extensions mix in naturally with your own hair, making it very difficult to tell that you are wearing them.
How much will it cost me to get hair extensions?
Hair extensions can cost anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars, depending on the amount of extensions you get, the type/ quality of hair used and the method used.
How long do hair extensions last?
Hair extensions can last up to 4 months albeit with maintenance.
What is the difference between synthetic and natural hair extensions? Which is better?
Natural hair extensions are made of human hair. They are a million times better (and way more expensive) than synthetic extensions because they can be colored, curled and styled easily, whereas synthetic hair may be damaged by the heat from a blow dryer or a curling iron. Moreover, synthetic hair extensions are widely available in department stores whereas natural hair extensions can only be obtained from salons that provide the extensionist services.
Can hair extensions damage my hair?
That usually depends on the expertise of the cosmetologist/ hair stylist/ hairdresser you choose. An inexperienced stylist can definitely damage your hair by suggesting the wrong type of extensions for your hair or using the wrong method to attach the extensions to your hair.
What are the different methods of attaching hair extensions?
A large variety of methods are used to attach hair extensions, some of which are weaves, bonding, metal tubing, heat shrink tubing, Adhesive-based fusion, braids, cornrows, twists and locks. Different methods will work for thin hair, thick hair, curly hair, thinning hair, straight hair, damaged hair etc. All the methods have their advantages and disadvantages. Newer methods are being invented and improved everyday.
Which method is considered the best?
The best method would be the one that most suits your hair type and which causes the least damage to your natural hair. And that is something only the professional can tell you!
What factors should I consider before getting hair extensions?
· First and foremost is of course money. You need to be ready for the heavy financial cost that you will incur.
· Secondly, you must ensure that you are using a licensed and experienced cosmetologist/ stylist. And always get a second, and even third opinion
· Do your research. Discuss at length beforehand what method would be best suited to your hair. Remember, what works for someone else’s hair may not work for yours!
Can I attach and remove hair extensions myself?
No. Attaching and removing hair extensions requires special training and education. Hair extensions must be attached by a professional hairdresser or hair expert. It is very difficult and risky to attempt to add hair extensions on your own. Improper removal can result in damage to your natural hair such as split ends, burned hair, thinning and even bald spots. However there are the clip-on type extensions that can be applied easily at home.
Can hair extensions be attached to short hair?
Hair extensions can be attached to hair as short as 3 inches.
Is the attachment process painful?
No. It is painless.
How long does the process take?
Attaching hair extensions is a time consuming process. Typically it takes around 4-6 hours on your first visit, and at least an hour on maintenance visits.
Do hair extensions require maintenance?
Yes. You will have to go back to the salon every 6-12 weeks for maintenance. Other than that, you will have to take special care of them at home. You will need to use a special brush to avoid damage. You will have to use cool water while rinsing your hair. You will also need to use a gentle shampoo and conditioner for them to keep them moisturized and to prolong their life. You would also need to sleep with your hair tied in a ponytail or braid in order to avoid tangles and knots.
What things should I avoid when getting hair extensions?
Avoid extensions that are heavier than your own natural hair because heavy extensions can break off hair. Your hair needs to be able to withstand the pressure of the extensions otherwise it will get damaged.
So ladies, clearly hair extensions have their pros and cons. At the end of the day, the choice to get them or not is your call.
