Michelle Obama – One Heck of a Stylish First Lady!
Who would have thought that the next style icon of our generation would originate from the insipid White House? After the über stylish Jacqueline Kennedy, finally there’s a First Lady who can kick ASS when it comes to making a fashion statement. After Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush’s boring, conservative and often matronly fashion choices, Michelle Obama’s chic sense of style comes as a breath of fresh air. So much so that she has been on the covers of many leading fashion magazines like Vogue and Glamour, and people are writing coffee table books on her amazing fashion sense!
Michelle Obama’s great natural style was first noticed when her husband became a serious contender for the presidency. But she made her grand entrance into the fashion world when she wore that drop dead gorgeous Jason Wu ball gown to the inaugural ball. The one-shoulder ivory dress with a fitted bodice and a flared skirt, was made with over 20 yards of silk chiffon and thousands of organza flowers and was embellished all over with millions of glittering Swarovsky crystals. Ever since then, critics have been following Obama’s every fashion move and coming up with nothing but praise.

The best thing about Michelle Obama in my opinion, is that even in a time and day when all people talk about are big brands, labels and designers, this brave First Lady does not shy away from wearing pieces from obscure designers and low-end retailers. In the news recently for wearing a $35 dress by Swedish retailer H&M on ‘The Today Show’ (which she totally ROCKED by the way) Obama proved that you don’t have to spend thousands, or even hundreds of dollars to look fabulous. Obama’s personal stylist paired the navy blue and white polka dot dress with a red belt and yellow heels and also added on some custom sleeves, so that the ensemble reflected the First Lady’s cool personal sense of style. The dress by the way, has sold out in H&M stores across the country ever since the show aired. No surprises there!
Despite her privileged position, Michelle Obama is not new to frugal fashion. In the past she has worn clothes from J. Crew, H&M, Target and even a $10 GAP T-shirt with jeans! Sure she wears upscale designers like Narciso Rodriguez, Maria Pinto and Jimmy Choo as well, but she knows where to the draw the line, especially in today’s fragile economy. Michelle Obama is one hell of a smart woman. She is very careful not to be extravagant all the time when it comes to her wardrobe, and by doing that she is making herself more accessible to millions of American women.
Even more importantly, Obama’s look resonates with the younger generation who are President Barrack Obama’s strongest supporters. Mrs Obama matches the fashion of her times just like Jackie Kennedy did, with whom she is constantly compared.
Being the wife of the President of United States means that you don’t have the luxury of wearing what you want, wherever and whenever you want, without being endlessly criticized. Obama’s wardrobe particularly, has been the object of immense scrutiny by fashion critics ever since she became First Lady in 2008. Just last month Obama chose to wear a red gown by British designer, Alexander McQueen, to a Chinese state dinner much to the chagrin of American designers. Many big names of the American fashion industry (including Oscar de la Renta) criticized the First Lady for not wearing an American designer on a visit which basically aimed to promote American-Chinese trade. Obama responded by saying that she wanted people to focus more on her causes than her clothes. She defended her decision to wear a non-American designer by saying:
“I like to patronize American designers, and the vast majority of the clothes that I wear are [designed by Americans.] But there are a lot of other designers that have cute stuff, too.”
“I don’t buy a designer, I buy a dress. I buy the thing that looks good. And then it’s like, oh, who is this?”
